Comparative secondary structure model of the LSU rRNA gene of Crassostrea virginica. Predicted locations of structural domains are represented by the roman numerals I - VI; however, Domain III is absent in the C. virginica LSU. Nucleotides in tertiary interactions that are predicted by comparative analysis are connected with a thinner line, while thicker lines reveal connections between consecutive nucleotides that are not immediately adjacent to one another. The fragmentation of the LSU rRNA occurs between the 3' end of structural domain II and the 5' start of domain IV. The three characteristic helical features considered in molluscan phylogeny are present in Domains II, III, and V and are highlighted as features a, b, and c, respectively [51]. As presented, feature b is absent in C. virginica LSU.
