The initial precursor is the amino acid methionine, and key regulatory enzymes in the pathway are S-adenosylmethionine synthase, ACC synthase, and ACC oxidase. Previous published sequences in GenBank belonging to the ethylene biosynthesis pathway were used to identify genes in the carnation EST database by BLAST searches.
