Phylogenetic tree constructed from 16S rDNA sequences of Frankia strains used in this study. Reference strains are boxed. Nucleotide sequence identities (%) between query and reference strains of the same host-specificity group (HSG) are shown. Identities between strains of distinct HSGs were 98–99% for Alnus vs. Casuarina HSGs, 97–98% for Casuarina vs. Elaeagnus HSGs, and 97–98% for Alnus vs. Elaeagnus HSGs. Frankia from a Purshia tridentata nodule was used as an outgroup.
