D. magna was raised either in a vertebrate predator-free environment ('Calibrator1'), in incubation water of Leucaspius delineatus (sunbleak, 'Vertebrate predator'; A and C), or either in the respective calibrator ('Calibrator2') or in incubation water of larvae of Chaoborus flavicans ('Invertebrate predator'; B and D). Depicted is the mean relative expression (n = 3, ± SD) of actin or alpha-tubulin. Letters indicate a significant difference (p < 0.001) between calibrator and kairomone treatments.
