Proposed mechanism of wound-induced sesquiterpene biosynthesis and regulation. Wound signals stimulate the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) cascade and phosphorylate transcription factors downstream. Jasmonic acid (JA) signals occur via the hydrogen peroxide pathway or directly activate the transcription factors downstream. The activated transcription factor binds to the cis-acting element in the promoter of ASS1 and starts the transcription of sesquiterpene synthase.
