Gene expression in the venom glands correlates well with protein abundance in the venom. In both cases the correlation was strongly significant, although roughly half of the variance remained unexplained. These data show that mass spectrometry can provide quantitative data on protein abundance in snake venom proteomes. A similar pattern can be seen using publicly available snake venom proteins from NCBI as a protein reference (Additional file 8: Figure S1), suggesting that this technique should also work without species-specific transcriptomic data.
