Oil-composition and content of seeds for each soybean line. (A) The fatty acid composition of soybean seeds is shown for all nine soybean lines used in this study. The major fatty acids are palmitic acid (16:0), stearic acid (18:0), oleic acid (18:1), linoleic acid (18:2), and linolenic acid (18:3). The number before the colon indicates the number of carbon atoms, and that after the colon, the number of double bonds in the fatty acid chain. Lines are sorted by their oleic to linoleic acid ratio. Commodity soybean oil typically contains 13% palmitic acid (16:0), 4% stearic acid (18:0), 20% oleic acid (18:1), 55% linoleic acid (18:2), and 8% linolenic acid (18:3) [29]. (B) The oil content of soybean seeds is presented for all nine soybean genotypes used in this study.
