Multiple alignment with MAFFT followed by PHYML clustering revealed two subgroups of cichlid OR: one with a classical MAYDRY motif followed by 3 cysteine residues indicated by a blue star; and a second with an altered MAYDRY motif in which the aspartate residue (D) is replaced by a glutamate residue (E). See Additional file 9 for the genes of each of these two groups and a complete alignment of their sequences.
