Figure 2

Taxonomic classification of the A. leptorhynchus transcriptome assembly. The bar chart shows the top results of the BLASTn sequence search against the entire NCBI nt sequence set (E-value cut-off = 10−5). Hits from assembly contigs with multiple transcripts were counted only once, using the highest scoring (bit score) transcript per assembly gene. Results were qualitatively similar when considering all transcripts individually (not shown). Note that all the top 18 hits are species of fish, with the best represented species being the characiform A. mexicanus (green), followed by the cypriniform D. rerio (yellow). The cladogram of subclass Neopterygii of the class Actinopterygii shows the phylogenetic relationships between the species (in italics) represented among the top BLASTn hits. The largest number of matched sequences was observed in species belonging to closely related orders (underlined), with the rest of the hits including a member of the order Lepisosteiformes, and numerous species in the well-represented superorder Acanthopterygii. (Cladogram compiled from literature, after: [66,67,82]).
