Geographical distribution of long-tailed macaques ( Macaca fascicularis ) and geographical origin of samples. Species and subspecies distributions are depicted according to [12] and adapted from [15]. The distribution of M. f. aureus, M. f. fascicularis and M. f. philippinensis is indicated by black, dark grey and light grey regions, respectively; the hatched region indicates the transition zone between the latter two subspecies. Subspecies on small islands are named in the map as are countries and islands mentioned in the text. Open and filled circles indicate approximate and exact geographical origin of M. f. fascicularis samples, respectively. ID numbers correspond to those in Figure 2 and Additional file 2: Table S2.
