Evidence for the effects of variable genes between TIGR4:19F and SpnYL101 in carriage isolates. (A) For each gene that contained a non-synonymous substitution between TIGR4:19F and SpnYL101, we identified a pair of carriage isolates that are serotype-matched, closely related, but differ substantially in the target gene alleles, such that phenotypic differences within the pair could be reasonably attributed to allelic variations in the target gene. (B) The carriage isolates were subjected to the non-opsonic neutrophil-mediated killing assay. Mean survival rates are shown (n = 10 for each strain). Error bars represent SEM. The p-values were derived from t-tests.
