Schematic of large scale loss and limited acquisition of virulence-associated factors during the evolution and speciation of the genus Bordetella. The evolution of Bordetella into three species clades was accompanied by clade-specific, species-specific and strain-specific acquisition and loss of pathogenicity-associated factors. Gene gain or loss indicated on the branches of the tree affected the whole clade or species, events indicated below the species name affected individual strains.
