Schematic diagram of the flagellin glycosylation islands of FGI+ Geobacillus strains. The strains were clustered into five distinct types on the basis of the presence/absence of orthologs of the FGI proteins. The flanking genes are coloured in grey, while the flagellin genes and flagellum biosynthetic genes are indicated in purple and blue, respectively. Genes coloured in green are involved in glycosylation and glycan biogenesis, while yellow arrows denote those genes involved in further modification (formylation and methylation) of the flagellin protein and/or glycan chain and orange arrows represent the predicted maf genes. Genes coding for hypothetical proteins of unknown function, transposases and truncated genes are shown as white, black and red arrows, respectively. A scale bar indicates the predicted size of the FGIs
