In the diagram, thin solid lines represent individual progeny that survive, and thick grey lines represent the total progeny of a gene that do not survive. In this example the only gene, all of whose progeny survive, is g4. Here \(a_{1}^{(i)}=2, a_{2}^{(i)}=a_{3}^{(i)}=a_{4}^{(i)}=1, m_{i+1}=2\times 1+1\times 2+1\times 3+1\times 4 = 11\)
