 A schematic overview of TE expression and silencing in leaf and EC. In leaf tissue, TE expression is generally low, with both genic and intergenic TEs methylated in CHG context. In EC, genic TEs have reduced CHG methylation and are transcribed with the genes in which they are co-located. This triggers RdDM, in which the TE transcripts are processed into 24 nt het-siRNAs that guide trans silencing of repeat sequences across the genome
