Note added in proof: After acceptance of this article, we became aware that the haplogroup we labelled "M16" was also found by Dubut et al. (Hum. Biol., in press) but was named "M23" in that study. Furthermore, a recent article by Zhao et al. (PNAS, online 2 Dec 2009) used the "M16" label but for a completely different branch. Therefore, to avoid conflict between studies, we have replaced "M16" with "M23" throughout."
