Expression levels (FPKM) of asparaginase genes in the embryo and endosperm of developing grain from wheat (Triticum aestivum) genotypes Spark and SR3. Plants were grown with sulphur either supplied (+) or withheld (−) and analysed at 14 and 21 dpa. Results for each homeologue are shown separately, as indicated. Gene reference numbers are given in Additional file 2. The increase in expression of all three homeologues in response to sulphur deficiency at 21 dpa in the endosperm of both Spark and SR3 was significant (p < 0.01), as was the decrease in expression of the B genome homeologue in the embryo in response to sulphur deficiency at 21 dpa in SR3 (p = 0.017)
