  1. We validated our chosen set on two qPCR datasets. In each dataset we used our algorithms to calculate normalization rankings for all possible combinations of miRNAs present in a dataset and then noted the highest place in the rankings of the combination derived from our chosen set. Full list in the Additional file 1: Table S3. The combination with the lowest average (0.0231) ranking from the validation datasets consisted of miR-24, miR-222 and miR-27
