Schematic representation of the “threshold model” of sex reversal illustrating the many factors involved in initiating and maintaining sex reversal compared with male development. While male development readily progresses due to the presence of male sex chromosomes and the expression of male specific genes, the initiation of sex reversal relies on the compounding influence of many factors. Ovotestes are produced as an intermediate phenotype due to the competing influences of male and female sex determination pathways
